The elves are hard at work creating toys, a snowman begins to pop up in the snow-covered field, and children grab their sleighs for a day of play.

‘Tis the season for Christmas lights, carolers, and holiday decorations! Once you’ve decorated the inside of your home, it’s time to start decorating outside the house for Christmas. It might seem like there are more holiday-decorating ideas for the inside of the home than the outside, but you’ll be surprised to learn just how much fun you can have while decorating the outside.

With the holidays quickly approaching, you’ll want to start the process sooner than later. You’ve noticed your neighbors starting to transform their homes, so it’s time for a little friendly competition. Get out your ladder, all your Christmas cheer, and prepare to have one of the jolliest homes on the block!

Continue reading below to learn how to get started making your home cozy for Christmas by decorating outside!

1. Rope Lights on Trees

If you want to have the jolliest house on the block, then you must consider all the small details. Lights on the house is a popular idea, but you don’t need to stop there. You can hang lights on the trees in your yard as well.

White rope lights are elegant and will compliment your Christmas decorations well. If you have a lot of color in your outside decorations, then colorful rope lights will work too! Simply wrap the lights around the trunk of the trees in your yard.

Depending on how the branches are on the trees, you might be able to wrap a few rope lights around some of the branches also.

2. Ornaments on Trees

Wrapping lights around the trees is a wonderful starting point, but let the fun continue! You hang ornaments on the tree inside your home, so why not hang ornaments on the trees outside your house too? If you can’t find outdoor ornaments to hang, don’t panic.

You can easily make your own! Find some decorations that are weather resistant. You might want to look in the outdoor decor section for fun items like a candy cane, a gingerbread man, a snowman, Santa Claus, and more. Then, you can attach some fishing line to them and hang them from the branches of the trees when you are decorating outside.

It creates a winter wonderland right in your very own front yard.

3. More Than a Wreath

Many families love to place a Christmas wreath on their front door. This is a great idea, but you can do so much more as well! Consider placing a decorated garland across the top of the doorway.

You can also place decorated plants in pots on either side of the door. Think of any other way to decorate the front of the door and the entire area around it. You can find beautiful holiday doormats to put down and make use of Christmas lights too when decorating outside. The more the merrier!

4. Decorated Outdoor Bench

Placing a bench outside under a tree or near the front door gives the outside of your house a warm and welcoming feeling. A white bench is ideal for the winter. To ensure the bench is comfortable, you can add a few holiday-themed pillows made for the outdoors.

A large plant decorated with holiday lights will look splendid next to the bench. You can even consider adding a stuffed snowman, Santa, or something similar on the bench. If you want to have some more rope-light fun, then take another string of rope lights and wrap them around the back of the bench and the legs of the bench too.

5. Garland Wrapped Pillars

If your home has pillars, then wrapping them in garland is a beautiful way to start decorating outside of the house. Simple green garland strands around white pillars will bring color to your home and lots of holiday cheer. If your home doesn’t have built-in pillars, take a step back and look for other things you could wrap the garland around.

If you have a front porch with posts, then these are other great structures to wrap the garland around. You can also wrap it around the mailbox post!

6. Christmas-Themed Vehicles

Some vehicles you might park in a garage. For the vehicles you park in front of the house, make sure you decorate them too! Your personal vehicles can act as wonderful additions to your Christmas decorations.

You can hang a wreath on the front of the vehicle. You can also place lights on the sides of the vehicle as well. There are also some decorations made to place on the dashboard of vehicles that can add to the display!

7. Porch Christmas Tree

Why only have one Christmas tree when you can have two? Placing a Christmas tree on the front porch is a great way to bring the holiday cheer to the outside of your home. Use an extension cord if needed and wrap the tree in lights!

You can even add a few ornaments if desired, as long as they’re safe for outdoor weather elements. The lights should be outdoor lights as well. Make sure it’s placement doesn’t block the walkway to the door, and your outdoor tree will become a holiday favorite!

8. Lights as Highlights

When hanging lights around and decorating outside of your home, be sure to use the lights to highlight certain elements of your home. You can start by placing the lights along the edge of the roof.

You can then hang lights around the window frames and awnings too. To highlight the windows even more so, customized curtains from Visionbedding.com are a wonderful addition! This is a great way to highlight all the different structural elements of your house.
